The last show of IN HER WORDS was this past Thursday, May 9 at the Charles E. Beatley Central Library in Alexandria, VA, ending on a high note. The stately Beatley library was a delightful space to end the 2013 season and we were pleased to see the abundant turn-out as we ended the season.
We welcomed an audience of approximately 50 people of different ages, race and ethnicity– one of our most diverse audiences to date.
We ended this show differently than our other shows, holding a talk back, allowing the audience to give us feedback, ask questions and make general comments. It was a wonderful moment of emotion, poignant interactions and sharing. In our audience were twin sisters from Mississippi with family and community ties to the great Fannie Lou Hamer, we met elders who were impacted by McCarthyism which is talked about in the piece. We were approached by folks eager to help us continue the show and be part of our team and in our audience were educators interested to use our production as a teaching tool for their classrooms.
Thank you to everyone who welcomed our show into their venue, to the audiences who embraced us and to the sponsors who supported us. Thank you to everyone who helped spread the word, who sent kind encouragement and who brought people out to our show.
And, lastly, kudos to the incredible cast of professional entertainers who portrayed these remarkable women, breathing life into their story on stage. Without their brilliance, there’d be no show.
